Alpe d'Huez is well connected to several Alpine airports, with Grenoble, Lyon and Geneva all offering practical ways of reaching the resort. Grenoble Alpes-Isère is the closest airport, around 100km away, while Lyon offers a larger flight network and a relatively straightforward road journey. You could hire a car, but with so many transfer companies running shuttles to the resort, why not take it easy and let someone else do the work?
Geneva is further away, but shouldn't be overlooked. Its extensive choice of international flights, particularly from the UK, and competitive airfares can make it an attractive alternative, even after allowing for a longer transfer. At around 205–220km, Geneva to Alpe d'Huez is comparable in distance and travelling time with Geneva to Val d'Isère, which does not always spring to mind, yet you probably would not think twice about accessing Val d'Isère this way.
The nearest major railway station is Grenoble, approximately 65km below Alpe d'Huez, with regular regional buses and dedicated winter coach services connecting the city to the resort.
Which option makes most sense depends on where you are flying from, how many people are travelling, your arrival time and whether you want a direct transfer to your accommodation or are happy to make a connection.
