Alpe d'Huez Ski Marathon 2019 Review
Some of Frances best skiers take to the slopes of Alpe d’Huez (and Rob from Alpedhueznet!)
A good-sized crowd was in attendance for the first round of the 2019 French Long Distance Cross-Country Ski Cup in Alpe d’Huez on Sunday, January 6th.
The mass-start event saw the elite skiers kick off first followed by the remainder of the 104 strong field. Some of France’s best Nordic skiers were in attendance and the quality at the front of the grid was there for all to see. They were joined, at the start at least, by our very own reporter Rob Wood, who came a valiant last in a true Eddie the Eagle style effort.
The 30km course started at the base of the DMC area before climbing straight up to the DMC mid-station. It then went onto Lac Besson before carrying on towards the Alpette, then heading back to the “hippodrome” area before the final descent to the finish line at the DMC. A tough headwind from the DMC to the Alpette made the first 12km pretty tough although, on the whole, the weather was very favourable to the intrepid field.
Check out Rob’s video to see how he got on.
