Cold temperatures & sunny intervals in Alpe d'Huez this week

Our 7-day forecast for the week of February 5th

By Rob Wood, Updated

Low pressure and light winds will bring bitingly cold temperatures and sunny intervals this week to the Alps.

After a fairly settled week with a light snowfall on Wednesday night into Thursday, it looks set to be more of the same this week. Low pressure will dominate this week and, with the Jetstream anchored to the south of the Iberian Peninsula, it is going to be a cold week, but thankfully very settled with light winds. Daytime temperatures will have “highs” of -7ºC and, even though winds will be light and variable in direction in the main, at around 5 to 10km/h, the wind chill factor will make this feel more like -11ºC, so wrap up well. Nighttime lows will be very chilly at around -13ºC in resort.

The sunniest day of the week looks like being Thursday and, with very light winds of around 5km/h, this will definitely feel like the warmest day of the week. A ridge of low pressure, at around 1012 Mb extends across the Alps and with wide isobars all week should ensure light winds and no lift disruptions. The freeze height will stay at around 1000 metres all week, really good news for the snow condition this week!

Monday

A cold day with the possibility of a few snow flurries. Winds will peak at around 15km/h from the south-east in the morning before easing as the day goes on, dropping to around 5km/h. Cloudy skies in the main with little chance of any sunshine. Temperatures at altitude of around -7ºC, feeling more like -13ºC with the wind chill.

Tuesday

A similar day to Monday although a slight rise in the freeze height to around 1200 metres will bring slightly warmer temperatures of -5ºC (feeling like -8ºC). A bit of sunshine may break through in the afternoon. Winds will remain light at 5 to 10km/h and west-south-westerly in their direction.

Wednesday

Some sunshine in the afternoon is a real possibility but again another cold day with daytime “highs” of around -5ºC. With very light winds there shouldn’t be much of a wind chill factor. Winds remain very light at 5km/h and variable in direction.

Thursday

Definitely the best day of the week as far as sunshine goes as cloud cover looks set to break. Another cold day with temperatures of around -7ºC with very light winds (around 5km/h south-westerly).

Friday

As with the early part of the week, the Jetstream is anchored to the south of Spain so the run of cold temperatures to the north of the Jetstream will continue. Sunny intervals all day with daytime “highs” of -5ºC, it will be another cold day! Winds will remain light at 5km/h and westerly in direction.

Saturday

Cold again, as has been the case all week, with sunny spells in the morning and cloud building as the day goes on. Winds are still light at 5km/h and remain westerly in direction.

Sunday

Another cold day with light winds from the west. Daytime temperatures of around -5ºC and winds of 5km/h keep the trend of the week going. Cloudy in the morning with sunny intervals in the afternoon.
