Tunnel du Chambon Replacement Road Opens End of October

Former walking track will be opened to vehicles

featured in News & Reviews Author Ellie Mahoney, Alpe d'Huez Editor Updated

Since the tunnel du Chambon starting to collapse and the hillside started slipping into the lake, access has proved difficult to neighbouring locations and local residents have had to get creative to get to work or school (helicopters and small boats have been used to shuttle people back and forth).

But thankfully a reprise from this shuttling is in sight, as a walking track has been converted into a small road to allow the passage of cars once again.

The track is on the opposite side of the lake to the Tunnel du Chambon and will be 5km long when finished. Although work is still continuing to finish it off and secure the road against rock fall and avalanches over the winter, local authorities feel sure that it will be open to the public at the end of this month. The cost of the new road is around 5 million euros.

Access to La Grave and Oisans will be restored no doubt to much cheering from local residents and business owners!
