Alpe d'Huez Apres Ski Report:7th February 2009

Another week. More snow. More fun... You'll be pleased to know I'm back, fit and strong, and ready for whatever the rest of the season can thrown at me! (barring Jager bombs, Chartreuse, Vodka, Tequila, Gin & Whiskey!)

This fun-filled week began on Sunday with DJ Northey in Smithy's blazing out some classic dance anthems from the last decade... rolling back the years! The few that ventured out into the cold and snow were quickly warmed up dancing on the table to Haddaway's ‘What is Love' among others. Classics!

Monday was much busier. Once again it was the resorts bar crawl – where the reps from various tour operators show their new holiday makers the joys of the town on a bar crawl... comprising of popular bars Sphere, L'Etalon, O'Sharkey's, Underground, Smithy's before the few survivors stumble home at 5am from the nightclub Igloo - if they've made it that far! With a free shot in every bar, and the enthusiasm of an 18 year old on his first legal day of drinking, it all adds up to quite a messy rendezvous!

Those who survived and were up for another night out straight away, took advantage of theLounge 21 ‘Wine-Tasting' evening with resident expert Zippy. They then had the option of a Jagermeister night in Smithy's, or a night in Sphere with Still Nameless for some brilliant live music with John, Jez, and Morse. Most people took the sensible option, and went from one to the other! It's been a very pleasant, relaxed week in the Alpe of Huez, with spirits livened by YET ANOTHER HUGE dump of snow...POW!

Wednesday was the time for fancy dress, school shirts, freckles and pulled up socks for Smithy's back to school night! DJ Northey and MC ‘King' Comport were pulling the strings, the tables were in full dancing action, and gradually more and more local French men made their way upstairs having been locked out of Zoo Bar for their ‘ladies evening' with male strippers. I got asked to be one of the strippers but politely turned it down....hmmmm....... Torchey Harbour were playing down in the Underground for après ski, and with offers on tequila slammers, it certainly was a rowdier than expected après scene!

Bluefunkt returned to Smithy's on Thursday... where a quiet night turned busy with 30 pubnters all in superhero outfits took over the bar. Batman, Superman, and Catwoman were having a field day! O'Bar had their now incredibly popular 2 for 1 on cocktails between 10 and 11, and Ell was playing in O'Sharkey's for après with the snow pouring outside. It's been another amazing winter so far for snow, and après!

Friday was a bad weather day, and when I potted on up to Sphere bar I was expected to be able to relax in my jogging bottoms with a hot chocolate and my book. It was not to be... the place was rammed, and John spontaneously picked up his guitar, plugged in the mic, and played some classic Oasis numbers to the Vin Chaud hungry audience.

It's going to be a quieter weekend in the Smithy's Tavern of Dreams, with Big Night Brian back in the UK for a some kind of party, giving him ample opportunity to stock up on grenades for the last few weeks of the season...

Next week see's 300 Danes come to resort,Still Namesless play in Smithy's on Sunday and Sphere on Tuesday, Ell returns to O'Sharkey's on Monday, it's 80's night in Smithy's on Wednesday, and Gaz and Hands are playing après music in the Underground on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Enjoy the snow, drink in moderation, and be happy. Peace.
