A happy ending for the three skiers lost in La Grave
Following a week of avalanche deaths in Chamonix and Italy, it's with relief that we can update you on the story of the three missing skiers in La Grave. One of the group of four, realising they didn't know the way, turned back and headed to the col du lac to give the alert.
At around 17:00 on Monday evening, rescuers from the PGHM Briancon assisted by personnel from La Grave headed out on foot in very poor weather conditions from the top of the Meije cable car to search for the three skiers.
Following location details given by the fourth skier, rescuers managed to locate the three missing English and American skiers by around 22:00. Happily, although cold and shaken, all three were found safe and sound.
With the warming up of temperatures all over the Alpes leading to heavy rain up to around 2500m, the avalanche risk is markedly high at 4 out of 5, so going off piste is a very ill advised move at the moment.
