Mere Michel cafe review

A great little café in a super convenient location

By Rob Wood, Updated

Mere Michel Café is situated smack in the middle of resort, only a stones’ throw from the middle stop on the cross town bucket lift (aka the lobster pots) and as such it’s super convenient for days on or off the piste.

I was out on my bike on Friday afternoon, enjoying the lovely spring sunshine having skied in the morning and decided to pop in for a nice and convenient bit of lunch.

I was after something quick and inexpensive and Mere Michel Café was just what the doctor ordered.

It’s a small café located next door to the MGM Sports shop on the Route du Signal (basically at the top end of the main street past the ice rink and a 150 yards on your left) with a lovely small south facing deck outside. It’s got seating inside as well for days when the weather isn’t so good, but I chose the deck as it was sunny and it meant I didn’t need to lock my bike up. Its central location also means plenty of parking should you happen to be in a car.

Mere Michel cafe review food

The menu consists of homemade crepes and cakes, sandwiches, hot dogs and good selection of hot and cold drinks. There’s a little serving hatch out on the deck so ordering is really easy. I ordered a hot dog with onions, a packet of crisps and a can of Sprite all for €8.50 which is pretty good value and a fair bit cheaper than it would be up on the hill.

Crepes range from €2.50 to €4.80 for a wonderful Grand Marnier flambee affair. Sandwiches range from €4.60 up to €6.60. A good old fashioned cuppa is only €1.50 whilst a good quality cappuccino is €3. There’s free Wi-Fi as well which is always handy.

After only a few minutes my food arrived at my table and it was really good – the hot dog was in a nice toasted brioche bun with plenty of onions and a choice of sauces. Sat in the sun watching the “lobster pots” go past whilst eating a lovely hot dog was a great way to grab a simple bit of lunch without paying the premium that often accompanies mountain dining.

The homemade muffins are great here as well and are popular with the locals, which I always think is a good marker as to their quality, they even do a “cake du jour”. This is a great little café that I would thoroughly recommend and its location lends itself perfectly to ski and non-ski days as well.

Mere Michel Café is open from 8.30am until 6pm every day and a take away muffin is perfect to stick in your rucksack for a mid-morning snack and sugar hit up on the slopes.
