A guide to Alpe d'Huez
Alpe d'Huez is located on the "sunny side of the Alps", only one hour from Grenoble airport. Before you even get there you'll experience for yourself, the legendary 21 bends of the Tour de France, the final and most gruelling mountain stage of the tour.
Situated in the Grandes Rousses Massif, the resort nestles in a large south west facing bowl on a high plateau ensuring great weather and lots of sunshine all year round.
Apart from its reputation as a sun trap, Alpe d'Huez also boasts a wonderful ski area with more than 230km of pisted runs, catering for all tastes and abilities. Linking together 5 smaller resorts, the skiing ranges in altitude from 1100m at L'Enversin d'Oz, all the way up to Pic Blanc, the highest point in the area at 3330m. It is from here that the Sarenne ski run, the world's longest at 16km, descends into to the beautiful Sarenne Gorge and offers a number off-piste itineraries en-route. It can also be skied by moonlight, as part of a monthly organised excursion and is a downhill mountain biker's paradise during the summer.
Off the slopes, Alpe d'Huez has no shortage of activities to keep you entertained once the lifts have closed. There is a large sports centre, two swimming pools (indoor & outdoor), an ice rink, tobogganing and night skiing - all of which are included on your VISALP lift pass. It is also a key stop on the Andros Trophy ice driving circuit in December, an activity you can have a go at yourself right through the winter on the specially prepared track.
The resort is also renowned for its lively nightlife and has an extensive range of fun bars, late night clubs and excellent restaurants to choose from. There are regular live bands and DJs playing throughout the resort making the decision between staying out late or catching first lift even harder!
