More misery for skiers as airports increase security

Last week it was all about the snow and freezing temperatures causing trouble for those hoping to head to the Alps for their festive ski holidays, now it's delays at airports due to increased security following the suicide bomb attempt on the Amsterdam to Detroit Northwest Airlines flight.

Most airports have been experiencing delays of anything between 45 minutes and two hours for European flights. We spoke to a family travelling from Bristol to Geneva who said their flight had been delayed for around 1 3/4 hours this afternoon.

Aline Yazgi, director of external relations at Geneva airport commented : "We're advising passengers to arrive in good time at the airport, but particularly so now as this is a very busy time of year too."

Despite the delays, the only passengers who are being subjected to further security checks above and beyond the 'normal' level are those travelling to the USA. At the time of writing, all hand luggage content is being checked and passengers are being controlled more closely through the detectors, with searches by hand as well, but all these extra checks for passengers to America means that there are knock on delays for all passengers.

Geneva airport saw over 100,000 passengers pass through the airport this weekend just gone, which is traditionally one of the busiest weekends at the likes of Geneva, Chambery and Grenoble airports, along with the February school holiday period.
