A 76 year old man was killed yesterday in a freak accident involving chamois.

The man was hiking with his wife alongside a back road that connects the villages of Huez and Villard when a herd of around 15 chamois (mountain goats) passed by higher up the mountain side.

They dislodged a boulder that was the size of a car, according to local reports, which rolled down the mountain and across the road into the ravine below.

The elderly gentleman was struck by the falling rock as it passed and he died of his injuries at the scene. He was from the Alsace region of France and was on holiday with his wife.
