Snow report, 10 April 2025

What a fabulous sunny week we’ve had, with wonderful spring skiing on great quality snow here in Alpe d'Huez. The piste groomers are doing an outstanding job keeping the slopes in great condition, quite a challenge given the nightly freeze/thaw cycles.

The Next Few Days

It looks like the current settled weather will start to change from Saturday. Mild temperatures are expected to continue, and it’s unlikely to freeze below 2,500 to 3,000m. The best skiing is now found above 2,000m.

Over the weekend and into Monday, cloud and rain are forecast, with up to 20cm of snowfall possible above 2,700m. A light to gentle breeze is expected to continue, becoming moderate on Tuesday.

There’s still a good snow base on high, sheltered north and east-facing slopes. As the snow softens through the morning, expect some lovely spring skiing conditions.

Avalanche Risk

The current avalanche risk is moderate at 2 out of 5 above 2,500m. Recent strong winds have created unstable wind slabs near ridgelines, in gullies, and bowls which can be triggered by skiers or snowboarders.

There are also weak layers deeper in the snowpack on steep, shady slopes at higher elevations. Take extra care on wind-loaded slopes and north-facing terrain above 2,500m. Be sure to check the avalanche warnings in Alpe d'Huez before venturing off-piste.

Top tips if you are skiing this week

We have spring ski conditions now and although the pistes are fairly quiet, they will be getting busier as the European school holidays for Easter have begun. There are plenty of events planned in April in Alpe d'Huez, check out our events calendar.

  • The temperature is changeable in the mountains, we’re properly spring skiing now, but it may be a little chilly out of the sun. So thinner layers, a shell jacket rather than a thick winter coat, more lightweight gloves are a good idea, and open those vents as the day warms up!
  • Don't forget the sunscreen! Even when the windchill is high, the sun in the mountains is still intense.
  • You’ll need your goggle lenses for sun this week
  • Early morning the pistes are harder packed and maybe a bit icy and then a bit slushy in the afternoon. So coordinate your ski time to whichever conditions you prefer.
  • Get your skis and boards waxed as the wetter snow can slow you down a bit!
  • Book the sunny restaurant terrace for a long lazy lunch
