Snow report 12 December 2024

Imprint
By Caro Blackwell, Updated

It's a great start to the season here in Alpe d'Huez. We did get the good dump of snow last weekend and it stayed really cold here in Alpe d'Huez, with sunny days! This means that the snow cannons have been running to help build up the base that we have. The snow depth is currently around 110cm at the top and 53cm at the base.

The next few days look changeable with a high pressure coming in from the West and the UK and air pressure rising up to Friday. This means more sunshine, very light winds and freezing temperatures at around 1500m.

Changing weather

Friday sees a weak low pressure so it will become cloudy and there is light snow showing in the forecast over the weekend, maybe as much as 8-10cm in some parts of the French Alps. Some of the snow could reach us by Friday night. Snowfall is possible on Sunday and the freezing temperature will drop to around 800m, before the new high pressure comes in.

Early next week

However the new high pressure is stronger and will bring warmer temperatures by Tuesday which will stay for a few days. Temperatures will be mild, getting up to as high as 8 - 10°C at 1200-1500m.

Looking ahead

By next weekend as the high moves away, the temperatures will drop right down again and light snow looks possible. Looking ahead, which is always hard to predict, but it looks like Santa may be bringing the Christmas gift of a much bigger snowfall from 23 December for a few days!

Happy holidays in Alpe d'Huez

We hope you all enjoy a great holiday time in Alpe d'Huez and the new snow that was predicted has arrived and that it's still snowing now. Like you, we're taking a little holiday breather for a couple of weeks from our usual snow updates and predictions... We’ll be back with our first snow report of the New Year on 3rd January and hoping that all of our new year wishes come true with mountains full of powder and bluebird days ahead.

If you’re an off-piste skier, make sure to always check the latest avalanche warnings as it’s still early season and although snow coverage looks good it could be thin in places and not yet compacted. (Scroll down the page to see today’s avalanche rating). Stay safe when off-piste, read our guide to avalanche safety.

Planning ahead

Remember the resort will be busy over the Christmas and New Year holidays, so if you are looking to eat out on the mountain or in town, it’s a good idea to get that booked up early…

New Years Eve

If you are heading out to celebrate New Year’s Eve, book now! The bars and restaurants only have limited space, the resort will be full, and some restaurants are offering two sittings. You will find it difficult to get into places if you haven’t booked your restaurant in advance.

What’s going on in January
