Alpe d’Huez is sitting under clear winter skies this week with a bright, open feel across the mountain. The south facing slopes are catching plenty of light, while shaded areas higher up are holding onto a more classic mid winter look. The season is settling into a steady pattern now, with reliable skiing on the main areas and a calm, confident atmosphere around the resort as people spread out across the wide terrain.
Snow depths in Alpe d’Huez are currently around 40 to 60cm at resort level, increasing to roughly 160 to 200cm across the higher slopes and glacier areas. There has been little fresh snowfall in recent days, though the existing base remains well preserved at altitude thanks to cold overnight temperatures. Freezing levels have mostly stayed below 1200m, with daytime temperatures in resort hovering around zero and colder conditions higher up. Winds have generally been light, though occasionally noticeable on exposed ridgelines. Skiing conditions are best above mid mountain where the snow remains cold and packed, particularly on north facing pistes. Lower slopes can feel firm early in the day and soften more noticeably in the afternoon due to sunshine, especially on south facing runs.
The outlook for the coming days points towards largely dry weather with continued cold nights and a welcome chance of light snowfall later in the week at higher elevations. These conditions should help maintain piste quality, though sunshine will continue to influence snow softness on lower and sunnier slopes. Alpe d’Huez has a busy winter programme running through January, including on mountain activities, live music events and family focused entertainment in the resort centre, keeping the atmosphere lively without being overwhelming.
Overall conditions in Alpe d’Huez are stable and enjoyable, with the best skiing found higher up and on shaded terrain. Plan earlier starts for firmer snow, and follow the sun carefully if you prefer softer conditions later in the day.
