On July 19th, Thomas became the first Britain to win the infamous Alpe d'Huez stage of the Tour, and the first person to do so while wearing the yellow jersey.

In an uphill sprint to the finish of the 175.5km stage from Bourg-Saint-Maurice, the Welshman came in ahead of Team Sunweb's Tom Dumoulin and Romain Bardet of Ag2r-La Mondiale, with Sky team-mate Chris Froome in fourth. This leaves Thomas in the yellow jersey, 1:39 ahead of Froome after over 49 hours in the saddle.

The Tour de France and Alpe d’Huez go together hand in hand, and 2018 makes it the 30th stage finish in the Alpine resort town. Ever since local businessman and owner of the Hotel Christina, Georges Rajon, brought the race to resort in 1952, Alpe d’Huez has become the most famous of all the gruelling climbs tackled in this iconic race.
