Snow report 5 December 2024

It’s beginning to look and feel a lot like winter out here in Alpe d'Huez. Snow capped peaks once again dominate our winter landscape and it’s really cold. We're at the start of a new ski season now, who’s excited? We are excited to bring you an up to date snow report every week throughout the season.

Alpe d'Huez opened on 30 November and we’ve been enjoying fabulous early season skiing on quiet and mainly sunny slopes.

Tonight through to Sunday we are expecting a good snowfall of around 36cm, the heaviest to be on Saturday evening. The early part of this week was extremely cold and although it has warmed up a little on Thursday and Friday, we will see the temperature plummet by Friday night getting down to -9°C by Saturday night.

The freezing level earlier this week was down to around 1000m and is hovering around 2000 - 2400m for the end of the week. This will drop down to around 850m at the weekend, with fresh north westerly winds on Saturday getting lighter into Sunday.

Although the snow coverage is looking good, be aware that as this is early season and the off-piste areas will not have been skied much yet, so not well compacted and there is likely to be thin coverage in many places.

The first planned event for the season is the Mogul Ski World Cup starting on the 12 December and the Christmas festive atmosphere is beginning to build in resort. It’s exciting to see the resort all white again, the mountains adorned with skiers and restaurants and bars open and buzzing once again.
